4/1/2011- DAY 25
As soon as we arrived and set up, we prayed the 40 Days intention that we
would realize the generational impact abortion has on our nation. We soon
noticed a young couple walking in the alley towards us. We offered to help them
for free. They accepted our literature. The male was holding the young girl’s
purse and doing the talking, “No, no, we are just going inside to talk.” We still let
them know of our resources and other options rather than abortion as they walked
by. Something told me to ask them, “Do
your parents know you are here?”
A few minutes later, we intercepted a girl who parked on the hospital lot behind us. Soon, we were inside our ultrasound van with our first save of the morning. As we were inside the van saving this baby, “Just get your van off this lot or we will arrest you! And don’t do it again or we are going to file a complaint,” was yelled at us. Wait a minute, it’s April Fools Day; this is a joke, right? I heard Stan screaming, “They’re going to arrest you Angela!” as I was beginning to scan this abortion-minded mother who came inside our van rather than walk inside Hope abortion mill.
Yes, it was April 1st known as April Fools Day, but when I went to check out the situation, it was really happening. The Granite City police and hospital guards were standing outside our van ready to apprehend the director of the 40 Days for Life spring campaign outside the Granite City abortion mill, and for the past 18 ½ years director and nurse manager of the ultrasound van. I looked at one of the officers and asked, “Isn’t this a little over-kill?” I then recognized one officer, “Mertz, is that you?” I asked his badge number and name; he confirmed it was him. I walked closer to his car. “Why are you harassing us and picking on the ultrasound van? We are doing a good thing here.” I pointed to the four other cars parked on the barren emergency room lot we were on and said, “Those cars are inside the abortion mill killing their babies. We’re saving them.” He just looked at me. I then said, “As soon as I finish helping this woman with her ultrasound I will move off the lot,” and I prayed as I went back inside the van.
The girl was crying. I assured her it would be okay. I finished scanning, and to her surprise and shock there on the screen was her approx 6 week old baby floating in the ocean of amniotic fluid. She cried; I hugged her, “It’s okay. I know you’re frightened, but that’s why we are here. We can do all things with God’s help.” I kept showing her that precious humanity auditioning for its life on the screen; the more she watched, the better she was feeling. We went over physician follow-up and placed a call to set up her first prenatal exam. We then went over resources. She was concerned that the police were going to arrest me, but I reassured her, “As long as we get off the parking lot we’re okay.” She hugged me and thanked me for being there. Her friend added, “I’m glad you guys were here too.” We walked them to their car.
The police and guards were still waiting. What we go through to save
babies is ridiculous, but just part of the pro-life persecution we go through in
this City of
God, You formed us in our mother’s womb and planned a unique and special life
and purpose for each one of us, and we thank you. Grant that we may pray and
work for an end to abortion, especially during these 40 Days, so that no unborn
baby you have made mail fail to achieve Your divine intention for him or her
because of intentional abortion. We pray this for the sake of Your Son, our Lord
Jesus Christ, Amen.”
